In march 2025, Auckland Global Trekkers explored a different side of Chile — the vibrant central coast, where golden beaches, dramatic headlands, colourful seaside towns, and peaceful national parks created a journey full of variety and charm. Our base for the trip was Viña del Mar, overlooking the sweeping sands of Reñaca Bajo, a perfect place to unwind each evening as the sun dropped into the Pacific in a blaze of orange and gold. Those sunsets became a daily ritual — a quiet moment of beauty shared by the whole group.
Viña del Mar – Our Coastal Home
Our accommodation sat high above Reñaca Bajo, giving us uninterrupted views of the coastline. From morning light on the waves to the fiery sunsets each evening, the ocean framed our entire stay. Viña del Mar’s relaxed atmosphere, palm‑lined avenues, and beachside cafés made it the ideal base for exploring the region.
Chachagua Coastal Walk – Cliffs, Waves & Wild Beauty
One of the highlights of the trip was the Chachagua coastal walk, a rugged stretch of shoreline where the Pacific crashes against rocky cliffs and seabirds wheel overhead. The trail offered a mix of sandy paths, viewpoints, and quiet coves. We stopped often to take in the scenery — the raw energy of the ocean, the wind in our faces, and the sense of space that defines Chile’s coastline.
Casablanca & Quintay – Wine Country Meets Fishing Village
A day trip inland took us to the Casablanca Valley, one of Chile’s premier wine regions. Rolling vineyards, cool‑climate wines, and peaceful countryside made for a relaxing change of pace. From there, we continued to Quintay, a small fishing village with a historic whaling station and a beautiful sheltered bay. Fresh seafood, coastal views, and a slower rhythm made this a favourite stop for many.
Santo Domingo, Cartagena & Rosario Arriba – Exploring the Coast
We spent a full day exploring the southern stretch of the central coast, visiting Santo Domingo, Cartagena, and Rosario Arriba. Each town had its own personality:
Santo Domingo offered long beaches and elegant coastal homes.
Cartagena buzzed with local life, colourful streets, and seaside viewpoints.
Rosario Arriba gave us a glimpse of rural Chile, with rolling hills and quiet landscapes.
It was a day of contrasts — from lively waterfronts to peaceful countryside.
Jumbo Hypermarket – A Slice of Chilean Everyday Life
No AGT trip is complete without a bit of local immersion, and our visit to a Jumbo hypermarket delivered exactly that. From Chilean snacks to fresh produce, local wines, and quirky finds, it was a fun and surprisingly memorable stop. The group stocked up on treats, picnic supplies, and a few unexpected souvenirs.
Curacaví & Zapata – Countryside Charm
Travelling inland again, we visited Curacaví and Zapata, small towns surrounded by hills, farms, and orchards. The slower pace, friendly locals, and rural scenery offered a refreshing contrast to the coast. It was a chance to see everyday Chile beyond the tourist trail.
La Campana National Park – A Walk Through History & Nature
One of the most rewarding days of the trip was our visit to La Campana National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its palm forests, granite peaks, and historic trails. Charles Darwin once explored this very landscape, and walking through the park felt like stepping into a living natural museum.
We hiked through shady valleys and open ridgelines, surrounded by native vegetation and sweeping views. It was a peaceful, grounding experience — a reminder of Chile’s incredible ecological diversity.
A Journey of Sunsets, Coastlines & Chilean Culture
Our 2025 Chile coastal adventure was a beautiful blend of seaside relaxation, cultural discovery, and natural exploration. From the unforgettable sunsets over Reñaca Bajo to the rugged cliffs of Chachagua, the vineyards of Casablanca, and the forests of La Campana, every day brought something new.
Most of all, it was the AGT spirit — shared meals, laughter, curiosity, and connection — that made this journey truly special.
We left Santiago Coastal with warm memories, sandy shoes, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the central coast.
