China: Zhangjiajie & Ancient Towns – AGT Adventure 2025

In June 2025, Auckland Global Trekkers set off on one of our most spectacular overseas adventures yet — a journey into the surreal sandstone peaks, deep valleys, ancient towns, and cultural heartlands of Zhangjiajie, Furong, and Fenghuang. Over nine unforgettable days, our group explored landscapes so dramatic they inspired the floating mountains in Avatar, wandered through centuries‑old riverside towns, and immersed ourselves in the rich traditions of Hunan Province.

Arrival in Zhangjiajie – A First Glimpse of the Peaks

Our adventure began at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, where the group gathered before transferring to Wulingyuan, the gateway to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Depending on weather and energy levels, we explored Binglang Valley, Baofeng Lake, or the charming streets of Wulingyuan itself — a gentle introduction to the region’s dramatic scenery. 

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – Four Days in a Fantasy Landscape

From 21–24 June, we dedicated our days to exploring the vast and otherworldly Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, home to more than 2,000 towering quartz‑sandstone pillars, lush forests, and winding cliffside paths. 

Each morning we set off early, entering the park near opening time to make the most of the cool air and quiet trails. Highlights included:

Yuanjiajie

Home to the famous “Avatar Mountains,” this area offered sweeping views of narrow stone spires rising through the mist.

Tianzi Mountain

A high plateau with panoramic views across the sea of peaks — one of the most breathtaking moments of the trip.

Yangjiajie

A more rugged, less‑visited area with dramatic cliffs and adventurous stairways.

Huangshizhai

A classic viewpoint area with wide vistas and peaceful forest paths.

We used a mix of hiking trails, cable cars, and the iconic Bailong Elevator, but always prioritised walking where possible to fully experience the landscape. Each day brought new scenery, new challenges, and plenty of photo stops as the group regrouped at junctions. 

Grand Canyon, Baofeng Lake & Tianmen Mountain

On 24 June, we returned to Zhangjiajie City and explored the region’s other natural wonders, including the Grand Canyon and Baofeng Lake if not visited earlier. 

The highlight for many was Tianmen Mountain, famous for its dramatic cliff‑hugging walkways, glass skywalks, and the legendary 999 steps leading to Tianmen Cave. Some of the group took on the stairs, while others enjoyed the sweeping cable‑car ride — one of the longest in the world. 

Furong Ancient Town – Waterfalls & Riverside Charm

On 26 June, we travelled by train to Furong Ancient Town, a beautiful riverside settlement built around a cascading waterfall. Here, the pace slowed as we explored stone alleyways, wooden houses, and viewpoints overlooking the river. Some trekkers opted for an additional hike in Zuolong Valley, adding a final burst of adventure to the trip. 

Fenghuang Ancient City – A Step Back in Time

Our final stop was the enchanting Fenghuang Ancient City, one of China’s most atmospheric old towns. Wooden stilt houses lined the Tuojiang River, lanterns glowed at dusk, and narrow cobblestone streets invited slow wandering. It was the perfect place to unwind, reflect, and enjoy our last evening together before farewelling the group on 28 June. 

A Journey of Peaks, Culture & Connection

Our Zhangjiajie 2025 adventure was a true AGT classic — a blend of challenging hikes, cultural immersion, shared meals, and unforgettable scenery. From the towering sandstone pillars of the national park to the ancient charm of Furong and Fenghuang, the trip offered something magical at every turn.

Most of all, it was the camaraderie of the group — supporting each other on steep climbs, sharing stories over dinner, and capturing moments together — that made this journey so special.

We left China with full hearts, tired legs, and memories that will stay with us for years.
