Patagonia: Torres del Paine W Trek – AGT Adventure 2025

In March 2025, Auckland Global Trekkers travelled to the windswept edge of South America to take on one of the world’s most iconic multi‑day hikes — the Torres del Paine W Trek in Chilean Patagonia. Over ten unforgettable days, our group journeyed through granite spires, turquoise lakes, hanging glaciers, and vast Patagonian valleys shaped by wind, ice, and time.

This was a true bucket‑list adventure — challenging, breathtaking, and deeply rewarding.

Puerto Natales – The Gateway to Patagonia

Our journey began in Puerto Natales, a colourful port town on the edge of the fjords. With two free days to settle in, the group explored the waterfront, stocked up on last‑minute gear, and enjoyed hearty Patagonian meals. The excitement built as we prepared for the days ahead — the W Trek was calling.

Day 3 – Into Torres del Paine National Park

Before dawn, we boarded the bus to Laguna Amarga, the entrance to Torres del Paine. After checking in, we transferred to the Central Sector and began our first major hike: the ascent to the Base of the Towers.

The trail wound through forests, valleys, and rocky slopes until the three granite towers — the park’s namesake — rose dramatically above a glacial lake. It was a moment of awe and achievement for the whole group.

We spent the night at Chileno Campsite, nestled deep in the valley. Some trekkers even set alarms for a pre‑sunrise hike to watch the towers glow red at dawn — a once‑in‑a‑lifetime sight.

Day 4 – To Frances Sector

We continued westward along the shores of Lake Nordenskjöld, with sweeping views of Los Cuernos, the park’s distinctive horn‑shaped peaks. Waterfalls tumbled down the cliffs, condors circled overhead, and the Patagonian wind reminded us who was in charge.

We arrived at Frances Sector, our home for the next two nights — a peaceful spot surrounded by mountains and forest.

Day 5 – The French Valley

This was one of the most spectacular days of the trek. We climbed into the French Valley, a dramatic glacial basin framed by towering peaks and hanging icefields. At Británico Lookout, the panorama was overwhelming — Cerro Paine Grande, Cerro Ferrier, Mt. Tenerife, and the Chacabuco and Balmaceda ranges all revealed themselves in a 360‑degree sweep.

Avalanches cracked in the distance, waterfalls shimmered in the sun, and the group soaked in the raw power of Patagonia.

Day 6 – To Paine Grande

We continued west toward Paine Grande, crossing open plains with views of turquoise lakes and rugged mountains. The refugio offered a warm bed, hot showers, and a chance to rest before the final push toward Glacier Grey.

Day 7 – Glacier Grey

The trail to Grey Refugio followed the edge of Lake Grey, with glimpses of floating icebergs and the vast Grey Glacier in the distance. As we approached the viewpoint, the glacier revealed itself — a massive river of ice flowing from the Southern Patagonian Icefield.

Some trekkers opted for a boat trip to see the glacier up close, while others explored the trails around the refugio. It was a highlight of the entire trek.

Day 8 – Catamaran Across Lake Pehoé

On our final day in the park, we hiked back to Paine Grande and boarded the catamaran across Lake Pehoé, a stunning turquoise lake surrounded by jagged peaks. From there, a bus returned us to Puerto Natales, where warm showers, soft beds, and celebratory dinners awaited.

Days 9–10 – Rest & Farewell

With a free day in Puerto Natales, the group explored cafés, craft shops, and the waterfront before saying our goodbyes. Patagonia had challenged us, inspired us, and left us with memories we’ll carry for a lifetime.

A Trek of Wind, Ice & Wonder

The Torres del Paine W Trek 2025 was everything we hoped for — dramatic landscapes, physical challenge, and the joy of walking together through one of the most beautiful places on Earth. From the granite towers to the French Valley to Glacier Grey, every day offered something extraordinary.

But as always, it was the AGT spirit — teamwork, laughter, shared meals, and encouragement — that made this journey truly unforgettable.
