Our AGT weekend escape to the Hokianga Harbour was a perfect blend of rugged coastline, native forest, golden beaches, and the quiet charm that makes Northland feel timeless. Over three days we explored the iconic Golden Stairs Track, the remote Waimamaku Coastal Track, and the windswept sands of Baylys Beach, all while enjoying good company, shared meals, and the relaxed rhythm of a weekend away.
The adventure began with a scenic drive north, stopping in Paparoa and Dargaville before reaching the long stretch of Baylys Beach. With its wide sands and rolling surf, it was the perfect first walk of the weekend — a chance to stretch our legs, breathe in the salt air, and settle into the slower pace of the west coast.
By late afternoon we arrived in Opononi, our base for the weekend. The harbour was calm, the hills glowing in the late sun, and the group gathered for a relaxed dinner. As night settled over the Hokianga, the quiet of the region wrapped around us — a peaceful start to the days ahead.
Saturday took us across the Rawene ferry and into the heart of the Hokianga’s forested hills. The Golden Stairs Track lived up to its name — September brought kōwhai blossoms, splashes of yellow brightening the bush, and the cool spring air made the climb comfortable and refreshing.
The track wound steadily upward through native forest, with birdsong echoing through the trees and glimpses of the Whangape Harbour appearing between the branches. The final viewpoint was spectacular: sweeping coastal panoramas, rolling hills, and the sense of standing above one of Northland’s most untouched landscapes.
After the descent, we returned across the harbour and made our way back to Opononi for a well‑earned dinner. The evening was full of stories, laughter, and that familiar AGT feeling of shared accomplishment.
Sunday’s walk took us south to the Waimamaku River and onto one of Northland’s most remote and beautiful coastal tracks. The trail followed the river toward the sea, opening gradually into a landscape of golden sand, rugged cliffs, and the endless blue of the Tasman.
The coastline felt wild and expansive — waves rolling in long lines, seabirds circling overhead, and the cliffs rising dramatically above the beach. The track offered a mix of bush, open views, and quiet solitude, making it a perfect contrast to Saturday’s forested climb.
By early afternoon we returned to the trailhead, pleasantly tired and full of that west‑coast calm. The group finished the weekend with food and drinks at the Three Furlongs Bar, sharing final conversations before the drive back to Auckland.
This Hokianga adventure captured everything we love about AGT weekends: beautiful tracks, remote coastlines, shared meals, and the joy of exploring together.
From the kōwhai‑lined Golden Stairs to the sweeping sands of Waimamaku, the region offered a perfect mix of challenge, scenery, and serenity. It was a weekend that reminded us how special Northland is — and how lucky we are to explore it as a group.
