Auckland Global Trekkers hosts beginner-friendly, social weekend and midweek walks across Auckland. Walks range from relaxed 5km coastal loops to moderate day hikes. We have a grading system of 1-5 for every event. You can find how the grading works by clicking on any event.
Joining is free! You can RSVP and connect with the community via our Heylo page at heylo.group/aucklandglobaltrekkers.
We offer carpooling for members who need transport! For most of our Sunday hikes, we organize carpooling meeting points (such as Freemans Bay 100 Wellington Street - Just use google maps to ask for Auckland Global Trekkers).
When you RSVP for an event on Heylo, simply answer the carpool question. Passengers chip in a small cash contribution directly to the driver (typically $15–$20 depending on distance) to cover fuel costs.
For standard day walks, we recommend bringing:
Comfortable walking shoes or trail runners (hiking boots for muddy bush tracks).
At least 1.5–2 liters of water and lunch.
A raincoat and layers (Auckland weather changes fast!).
Sun protection (hat and sunscreen).
Some basic first aid - band aid and panadol.
Backpack
Joining AGT and signing up on our Heylo platform is completely free! We ask for a small voluntary donation ($5) from attendees on our day hikes to help cover our website, administration, and group safety expenses.
You can pay by cash on the day or via online bank transfer.
While all Auckland Global Trekkers walks are organized by volunteers and participants are responsible for their own personal safety and wellbeing, we prioritize group safety far more than typical casual meetup groups:
🗣️ Pre-Hike Briefings: Every walk begins with a health and safety briefing outlining trail conditions, route highlights, hazards, and re-group points.
📻 Walkie-Talkie Coverage: Organizers manage the front (leader) and rear (tail-ender/sweep) of the group with walkie-talkies to ensure no one gets left behind or turned around. Experienced mid-group walkers often carry radios on larger or longer treks as well.
🩹 First Aid Support: Organizers carry a standard first aid kit on every walk.
🥾 Personal Responsibility: You are expected to choose walks matching your fitness level, bring appropriate footwear and gear, and stay with the main group.
We hike every single Sunday—rain or shine! If the weather changes, we simply adjust our route to ensure it remains safe and enjoyable. If you cannot make it to this week's walk, don't worry. Our future events are always posted on Heylo at least a month in advance, giving you plenty of time to plan ahead.
You can relax! We have a strict policy that no one gets left behind. We walk together and make scheduled stops at every single track junction to regroup and chat.
Each event includes a clear difficulty rating:
Midweek evening strolls are rated a very gentle 1.0 to 1.5 (about 90 minutes).
Sunday hikes are a moderate 2.0 to 2.5 (typically 3 to 4 hours of walking time, making it a great half-day out).
Adventurous hikes are occasionally posted with a higher difficulty rating (typically 3.0 to 4.0) for those wanting a tougher challenge.
The social side is a huge part of our group! Every hike finishes with an optional visit to a local pub, hotel, or vineyard—like the Rangiriri Hotel, Good Home, or The Hunting Lodge. It is a completely relaxed, pressure-free environment to grab a drink or a bite to eat, share stories from the day, and form great new friendships.
