Our AGT Sunday adventure took us south to Waiata Shores for a gentle, scenic walk that followed the water’s edge, crossed quiet neighbourhood paths, and led us onto the peaceful sanctuary of Pararekau Island. With soft breezes, calm inlets, and plenty of birdlife along the way, it was the kind of relaxed outing that captures the heart of what our Sunday walks are all about.
The morning began at Waiata Shores, where sunlight filtered through the trees and the group set off with the familiar rhythm of friendly chatter and steady footsteps. The path curved along the river, offering glimpses of still water, darting fantails, and the occasional pūkeko wandering through the reeds.
As we made our way toward Wattle Downs, the landscape opened into wide views across the inlet. The new walkway near the motorway added a surprising touch of modern design to the natural surroundings, giving us a smooth, easy route toward Karaka.
It was a relaxed, social stretch of the walk — the kind where conversations flow as easily as the river beside us.
When the island gates opened, we crossed onto Pararekau Island, a peaceful pocket of nature tucked just beyond the suburbs. The shift was immediate — quieter, greener, and sheltered by tall pōhutukawa that cast dappled shade across the track.
We wandered the island’s perimeter, stopping beneath the trees to share snacks and enjoy the views across the water. The tide whispered along the shoreline, and the group settled into the calm of the moment, taking in the sense of being somewhere slightly hidden, slightly special.
The island offered a perfect blend of nature and stillness, making it a highlight of the day.
After leaving the island, we followed the final stretch of walkway into Karaka, where our after‑function awaited at Urban Soul Café & Bistro. This relaxed gathering — a signature part of AGT’s Sunday rhythm — gave everyone a chance to unwind, share stories from the walk, and enjoy a well‑earned drink or bite to eat.
These post‑hike moments are part of what makes AGT feel like a community: the laughter, the conversations, and the simple pleasure of ending the day together.
From riverside paths to island quiet, this Waiata Shores to Pararekau Island walk offered a gentle, refreshing escape — easy terrain, beautiful views, and the kind of company that makes every kilometre feel lighter.
It was a day wrapped in sunshine, soft breezes, and good conversation, leaving everyone with warm memories and that familiar AGT feeling of having shared something simple and special.
