Bethells Beach to O’Neill Bay – A West Coast Walk of Waves, Cliffs & Warm Hospitality

A Sunday of Wild Coastlines, Wind‑Carved Dunes & Shared Moments

Our AGT Sunday adventure took us west to the dramatic coastline of Te Henga, where Bethells Beach stretches wide beneath towering basalt cliffs and the Tasman Sea rolls in with its familiar, untamed rhythm. With low tide on our side, we set off across the river, shoes in hand, laughter rising as the cool water swept around our ankles — the perfect beginning to a day shaped by nature’s raw beauty.

North to O’Neill Bay: Cliffs, Sand Dunes & the Sound of the Tasman

The walk north unfolded across firm black sand, the ocean on one side and rugged cliffs on the other. Te Henga Stream shimmered in the morning light as we curved toward the great sand dune that rises like a golden ramp between Bethells and O’Neill Bay.

Climbing the dune rewarded us with sweeping views — the kind that make you pause, breathe deeply, and feel the scale of the west coast. Dropping down into O’Neill Bay, we found ourselves in a natural amphitheatre of rock and surf. Waves crashed against the headlands, seabirds circled overhead, and the group explored the shoreline, caves, and viewpoints at an easy, unhurried pace.

Lunch was shared with the soundtrack of the Tasman, the breeze carrying just enough salt to remind us how alive this coastline is.

Returning South: Tide Pools, Wetlands & Late‑Day Light

The return walk revealed new textures — shifting light on the dunes, wind‑sculpted patterns in the sand, and the long sweep of Bethells stretching ahead. After crossing the river once more, we continued south toward the quieter end of the beach.

Here, tide pools glinted like mirrors, caves were etched into the cliff faces, and the wetlands behind the dunes whispered with the movement of reeds. It was a gentle, reflective finish to a walk that balanced drama and calm in equal measure.

A Signature AGT Finish: Soljans Estate Winery

No AGT Sunday is complete without our after‑function — and this week’s gathering at Soljans Estate Winery was something special.

The team at Soljans had everything ready the moment we arrived: beautifully arranged wine and cheese platters, chilled glasses waiting, and warm, attentive service that made the group feel genuinely welcomed. After a windswept day on the coast, settling into the comfort of the winery — surrounded by conversation, laughter, and good food — felt like the perfect closing chapter.

These after‑functions are part of what makes AGT unique: the chance to unwind together, share stories from the trail, and enjoy the simple pleasure of good company.

A Day of West Coast Magic

From the wild sweep of Bethells to the sheltered curve of O’Neill Bay, this walk captured everything we love about Auckland’s west coast — big landscapes, fresh air, and the sense of being somewhere ancient and alive.

Paired with the warmth and hospitality of Soljans Estate Winery, it became one of those AGT Sundays that lingers in memory long after the sand has been shaken from our shoes.
