Tongariro Alpine Crossing – November 2024

In November 2024, a group of Auckland Global Trekkers headed down to Tongariro National Park to take on one of New Zealand’s most iconic day hikes — the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. With its volcanic craters, emerald lakes, and sweeping alpine views, it’s a walk that always delivers something unforgettable, no matter how many times you’ve done it.

A Cool, Clear Start

We set off early from the Mangatepopo end, stepping into the crisp morning air with Ruapehu glowing behind us. The first section eased us in gently, following the valley floor past ancient lava flows and boardwalks that wound through the tussock.

The weather was kind — cool, calm, and clear — perfect conditions for the climb ahead.

The Devil’s Staircase & South Crater

The ascent up the Devil’s Staircase lived up to its name, but the group kept a steady pace, encouraging each other as the views opened wider with every step. At the top, the landscape shifted dramatically. The wide, flat expanse of South Crater felt like walking on another planet — silent, vast, and beautifully stark.

Red Crater & Emerald Lakes

The final climb to Red Crater was the toughest part of the day, but also the most rewarding. Standing on the rim, we were treated to one of New Zealand’s most famous views: the brilliant Emerald Lakes glowing below us, steam drifting from the vents, and the volcanic ridgelines stretching out in every direction.

It was the perfect spot for a well‑earned break and a few group photos.

The Long Descent to Ketetahi

From there, the track dropped steadily toward Ketetahi, passing the Blue Lake and skirting the edge of old lava fields. The descent was long but gentle, with views rolling out toward Lake Rotoaira and Taupō in the distance.

We finished tired but happy — the kind of satisfied tiredness that only a full alpine day can give you.

A Classic AGT Adventure

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a walk that never gets old, and this November trip was no exception. Great weather, great company, and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the country made it a standout day for the group.
