Waiheke Coast, Forest & Winery Walk – AGT Sunday Adventure

Our Sunday on Waiheke unfolded as one of those classic AGT days where scenery, sunshine, and good company all line up perfectly. From the moment we stepped off the ferry at Matiatia, the island felt calm and inviting, with a light breeze hinting at the coastlines and forests ahead.

Into the Kauakarau Forest

The walk began at Valley Road, climbing gently into the Kauakarau Bay Forest Reserve. The morning was cool under the canopy, with birdsong echoing through stands of native bush. It was the kind of start that settles everyone into an easy rhythm—steady steps, relaxed conversation, and the sense of a full day ahead.

Okoka Bay to Te Whau Point

Emerging from the forest, the group reached Okoka Bay, where the landscape opened into wide views across Waiheke’s southern edge. The road toward Te Whau Point offered some of the best vantage points of the day—rolling hills, quiet coves, and the deep blues of the Hauraki Gulf stretching out behind us.

Lunch & a Dip at Kauakarau Bay

By late morning we arrived at Kauakarau Bay, a favourite AGT stop. Even with the tide low, the bay was a perfect place to pause. Packs came off, lunch came out, and a few brave swimmers took a refreshing dip. It was one of those unhurried breaks where no one is in a rush to move on.

Through Whakanewha to the Vines

The afternoon carried us into Whakanewha Regional Park, following shaded tracks lined with pōhutukawa and nikau palms. The forest slowly gave way to open countryside as we approached Onetangi Road, where the pace softened and the anticipation of the final stop grew.

A Well‑Earned Finish at Te Motu

Reaching Te Motu Winery felt like the perfect reward. The group settled in among the vines with cheese platters, cold drinks, and the warm glow of a day well spent. Conversations stretched out, legs rested, and the valley views wrapped the day in a sense of calm satisfaction.

A Day of Variety and Connection

This Waiheke walk blended forest, coastline, quiet bays, and vineyard charm into a single, memorable journey. With 14–16 km covered and plenty of shared moments along the way, it was the kind of Sunday that captures what AGT is all about—nature, community, and a touch of indulgence to finish.
